The BEST Brunch Spots on the Shore

With Mother's Day approaching this weekend here are my top picks for the most delicious and Instagram worthy brunches to treat yourselves to!

Beam Café

Another new kid on the block, Beam Café in Milford serves up some of the best waffles Auckland has to offer. These aren’t just any plain waffles from any old café, oh no! Beam Café’s dish is inspired from the street waffles of Hong Kong, giving them a sponge cakey texture, topped with matcha ice-cream and candy floss to make them the sweetest and prettiest waffles ever. Not only do they serve up the most gorgeous of dishes but the café itself is super cute with beaming bright lights—just like its name suggests!

If you’re looking for out-of-this-world coffee, then look no further than Beam Café in Milford. But it's not just about the coffee! Beam Café is serving up some of the prettiest and tastiest brunches! Think candy floss on top of bubble waffles, almond croissants, eggs bene with fried chicken, and a black sesame smoothie to wash it all down. The hipster set-up and spacedog mural definitely have us beaming from ear to ear.

The Collins

Cornflake and macadamia-crusted French toast is what you’ve been searching for all along. The Collins is quickly gaining a rep for bringing cheat meal breakfast dreams to life.

If you’re anything thing like us, you take food very (very) seriously. Nothing comes between you and brunch—especially when Auckland’s best French toast is involved!

Let your love of all things delicious take you to Greenhithe where you’ll discover The Collins Café & Bar and—you guessed it—the best French toast in town.

Situated in a renovated villa, you’ll immediately feel at home in the bustling café. The sprawling interior of The Collins is divided into three areas: a moody foyer, a light and bright dining area, and break-out space with armchairs and a cosy fireplace.

If you prefer to dine al fresco, you’ll find a massive outdoor space scattered with picnic tables and an abundance of greenery—it’s the best pozzy to eat (and drink!) the day away. If you’ve got cherubs in tow, they’ll love the Collins Park playground across the road. Fur children are also looked after with water bowls and complimentary dog treats.

As for the food, The Collins has a mouth-watering all-day brunch menu—yes, you can totally have your French toast for afternoon tea.

The heavenly deliciousness continues throughout The Collins’ menu. In terms of sweet, you’ll find Belgian waffles stacked high and topped with seasonal fruit, mascarpone, lemon curd, bacon and the all-important maple syrup. On chilly mornings, warm up with spiced porridge topped with crumble—it’s the perfect winter warmer.

If you’re after something savoury, choose between the likes of avo smash, mince on toast and an aptly named ‘all the good stuff’ salad starring grilled chicken, soba noodles and edamame.

If you’ve got room for a ‘lil something extra (go on, you deserve it), the cabinet is brimming with tasty treats made by the resident pastry chef.

So, what are you waiting for? Discover this North Shore gem for yourself. You know you want that French toast…and everything else the café has to offer!

Major Tom

After making waves in Parnell and Epsom, the brains behind Winona Forever and Hello Friend + Allies have made their mark on the North Shore. Major Tom’s dishes live up to the Instagrammable standards of their sister cafes and taste just as amazing. Shore locals don’t have to drive across the bridge for those epic and indulgent caramel slices anymore. In fact, the people of CBD may find themselves having to make the trip to try out Major Tom’s Soft Shell Crab Eggs Benedict.

Major Tom is your one-stop spot for epic eats on the Shore. Found in Albany, this gem serves up culinary masterpiece after masterpiece. You don’t want to miss the out-of-this-world creamy mushrooms, loaded French toast and loaded hot chocolate creations. No matter what you’re in the mood for, there’s no doubt you’ll fall instantly in love with Major Tom.

What could be better than a weekend stroll along one of Auckland’s most beautiful beaches followed by one of Auckland’s best breakfasts? Zomer has you sorted.

Situated a hop, step and a jump from the beach, Zomer is the locals’ go-to for an early morning coffee, cruisy brunch or a refreshing bevvy after a stroll along the beach.

The café is all about indoor-outdoor flow with ample outdoor seating. And yes, they’re dog-friendly! Dine al fresco underneath a yellow and white pinstripe canopy or opt for a pozzy in the light and bright café.

Known and loved for their vibrant brunch fare, Zomer’s new menu will have you coming back time and time again. Kick-start your day with a smashed avo bagel, a Spanish-esque omelette or creamy mushrooms paired with garlic and chorizo. We’ll have one of each, thanks!

If you’re a sucker for all things halloumi, don’t go past the lemon and herb grilled halloumi. The cheesy delight showcases avocado, spinach and roast tomato alongside potato sourdough. If you’ve got a sweet tooth on you, dig into Zomer’s brioche French toast. We’re talking berries two ways (coulis and fresh), grilled banana and lashings of vanilla maple sauce. Yep, you’ll be tempted to lick the plate clean.

Visit for lunch and the mouth-watering goodness continues. Choose between comforting seafood chowder, an epic bacon and egg sammie or salmon ceviche jam-packed with citrus, cucumber and coriander. The chicken salad also deserves a special shout-out for its unmissable combo of orange, papaya and avocado—it’s summer on a plate. Zomer also has daily specials that showcase seasonal ingredients and a whole lot of yum!

Life’s too short to say no to dessert—especially when Zomer’s cabinet goodies are up for grabs. Baked fresh with a whooole lot of love, there’s everything from tarts and cookies to cakes and muffins (we love the chilli and cheese one). Keep an eye out for their heavenly apple turnover—it’s nothing short of divine!

Beach vibes paired with an incredible menu… what’s not to love?! Needless to say, we’ll be brunching at Zomer all summer long. See you there!

Scout Eatery

Scout is great for brunch but this café is well-known for having the best slow-cooked lamb dish in town. Juicy, tender and succulent, you won’t regret adding this order to the table. With an extremely versatile menu catering to all dietary requirements, Scout is the ideal place when catching up with a big group as there is literally something for everyone. Also, if you can leave the café without taking away some of their treats from the cabinet, we take our hats off to you and your willpower!

Scout is the latest cafe to hit Torbay with modern design, soft furnishings and oh-so delicious food. Scout brings old favourites like Blueberry Pikelets as well as new favourites like Ginger and Soy Smashed Tofu. Perhaps you've got a sweet tooth? They've got Brulee French Toast, served with Passionfruit, Fermented Strawberries, Vanilla and Green Tea Mascarpone and Matcha Crumble, and Kokako coffee and Golden Tumeric lattes all day long, this new opening is worth the drive. Post a pic on Insta, and your followers will most definitely be impressed (and drooling).
