The Ultimate Guide to the Spring Deep Clean

Spring is here and weather you are getting your home in tip top shape to go to the market or you are just in need of a really good deep clean to get your home and your sanity feeling fresh again, I have put together the ultimate spring deep clean guide, that will make the whole process a lot less overwhelming and much more satisfying!




First things first - Start with a plan! Do one room at a time and begin by doing a de-clutter.


Kitchen

  • Cabinets - Wipe down cabinets inside and out, organize and label, bin any broken items or donate what you never use, including any cracked or chipped plates or glasses.

  • Counter tops - Wipe down countertops, walls, backsplashes and window frames. Only have on the bench what you use daily.

  • Under sink - Replace brushes and sponges, combine clean products if you have more of one of the same and give away products you don't use.

  • Refrigerator - Clean out old food and wipe down shelves.

  • Drawers - Wipe down, organize and label. Throw out any old receipts or coupons

  • Pantry - Check for expired food or spices, wipe down shelves

  • Clean oven, stove top and extractor fan filters.

  • Clean the microwave and other small appliances - if you never use them sell them on TradeMe or donate them.

  • Polish cutlery and silverware

  • Dust and wipe down light fixtures.

  • Dust ceilings, wipe baseboards and crown moldings, vacuum and mop floors, clean windows.

  • Dust blinds, wash curtains.

Toss any items that are expired, and combine food where you can.

Only place on counters what you use daily.

Toss any food containers that don't have matches.

Donate any duplicate items.

Keep take-out ketchup, sauces, salt and pepper and cutlery in a labeled container to add to work or school lunches.


Bathroom

  • Scrub toilets - do not forget the outer bowl, around the base and the back of the system.

  • Deep clean shower and bathtub - soak

shower curtain or replace it, if you have a glass door remove soap scum build up, clean shower head and around faucets to remove build up grime, wipe down walls and tub.

  • Replace old worn out towels - donate old ones to an animal shelter or cut up and use as rags, wash all towels in napi-san and fabric softener to look and feel fresh again.

  • Cabinets and draws - wipe down, get rid of expired medicine, expired make up, old toiletries, old perfumes and samples. Everything else organize and label.

  • Counter tops - wipe down and put away anything you don't use daily, keep decorative items to a minimum.

  • Clean Walls, window frames, baseboards, crown moldings and light fixtures.

  • Dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors, clean windows.


Laundry

  • Washing machine and dryer - pull out to retrieve any items that have fallen behind, vacuum and mop before putting back, clean out filters and run an empty cycle to clean machine.

  • Wash basket - Get rid of any sock with no friend, clothes that are too big or too small, are stained beyond saving.

  • Cabinets - Wipe down, combine any clean products you have double up's of, get rid of any you don't use, organize and label.

  • Wipe down Window frames, baseboards, crown moldings, walls, light fixtures and windows, dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors.


Office

  • Get rid of old magazines, receipts, bank documents, statements, papers, notebooks, broken or dried out pens, markers and pencils, greeting cards, old or unsure electronics, books you will never read again, unfinished projects. - this may take the longest but be ruthless!

  • Draws, shelves and cabinets - clear out junk draw, wipe down, organize and label.

  • Clean computer monitor and keyboard, clean desktop of unwanted files and applications, update contacts, dust and wipe down desk and cords.

  • Wipe down Window frames, baseboards, crown moldings, walls, light fixtures and windows, dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors.

  • When tossing papers, be sure to shred any items that contain personal information. Consider creating an inbox for incoming mail and papers that can pile up quickly.

  • Dust blinds, wash curtains.

  • Check smoke alarm batteries.



Foyer/ Entrance

  • Clean or replace welcome mat

  • If you have flower pots by the front door now is a great time to replant with new season pots of colour.

  • Sweep patio and path way.

  • Store shoes properly, throw away any worn out shoes and replace gumboots if needed.

  • The entrance area is a nice area to have a scented candle or room scent, replace old ones with a nice fresh new fragrance.

  • Check all out side lights are working.

  • Wipe down Window frames, baseboards, crown moldings, walls, light fixtures and windows, dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors.

  • Dust blinds, wash curtains.

  • Check smoke alarm batteries.



Living/ Family Rooms

  • Put away anything thing that belongs in other areas of the house such as kids toys, items of clothing, shoes, office supplies, books, glasses and plates etc.

  • Movies and video games - get rid of any DVD's or games you don't watch or play anymore, including ones that are scratched.

  • Dust and wipe down the TV and all entertainment devices. Clean out all stored and watched online movies and programs to free up space.

  • Replace batteries in all remotes.

  • Wash throw blankets and cushions.

  • If you have carpet hire a rug doctor to give it a deep clean or if you have rugs, if they are Persian rugs I strongly recommend sending them away to be professionally clean.

  • Condition and clean leather couches, use couch cleaner on fabric couches, remember to vacuum in between cushions.

  • Wipe down and polish other furniture, dust and clean photo frames and tops of paintings.

  • If you have a wood burning fireplace arrange if a chimney sweep to come - it is advised to have your chimneys swept every year to prevent fire.

  • If you have a heat pump clean filter and when it is next due for a service.

  • Pull out all furniture and vacuum and mop floors.

  • Wipe down Window frames, baseboards, crown moldings, walls, light fixtures and windows, dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors.

  • Dust blinds, wash curtains.

  • Check smoke alarm batteries.


Bedrooms


  • Sort through wardrobe, get rid of all clothes and shoes that are too small or too big, that you no longer like or wear. Check for any clothes that need some repairs or dry cleaning.

  • Check heels and soles of shoes if any need replacing or washing.

  • Sort through underwear draws are get rid of any tired bars or undies.

  • Go through your accessories and donate or sell any items you wear or need such as wallets or belts.

  • Sell any jewelry you no longer wear or like.

  • Throw away any broken coat hangers, if your wardrobe is packed to the rim, invest in some slim coat hangers so everything fits better and looks more uniform.

  • Vacuum and clean the floors and shelves before putting your wardrobe back in an organize manner.

  • Organize draws and replace draw liners.

  • Pull out bed and vacuum and mop behind an underneath.

  • Flip and rotate mattress and wash all linen, blankets, pillows, cushions, mattress protectors.

  • Clean blinds or wash curtains.

  • Pull out and vacuum and mop underneath any other furniture and polish.

  • Wipe down Window frames, baseboards, crown moldings, walls, light fixtures and windows, dust ceiling, vacuum and mop floors.

  • Check smoke alarm batteries
